Build-a-Board Workshop: How PDK’s Modularity Simplifies Access Control

How ProdataKey Hardware Simplifies Access Installation

Simple To Install and Set up

Here at ProdataKey (PDK), we don’t just want you to install a run-of-the-mill, ordinary access control system. We want every end-user to have an access control system that feels unique to them–like a best friend! But how can you make an access control system that feels so special to each and every customer? The answer: modularity!

“At the end of the day, what we strive to do is merge convenience with high security,” says Dallan Labrum, PDK’s Executive Vice President of Sales, and modularity is just one of the many ways that PDK creates this optimal security experience. ProdataKey provides end-users the ability to completely tailor their access control experience through the installation of door access modules, namely the PoE++ and WiMAC™ kits. Additionally, with the modular Red Max door controller, users can install a variety of expander boards, creating an access control solution optimized for their specific security needs.

Welcome to the Build-a-Board Workshop, everybody! Let’s take a look inside.

PDK WiMAC Modules

ProdataKey’s WiMAC™ Module: Making Communication Simple

WiMAC™ is a unique, high-tech solution created by ProdataKey in order to simplify communication between devices in an access control system. When you plug a module into its designated spot on a controller’s board, it will automatically know to communicate with other controllers over WiMAC™ wireless. Dallan describes a situation where installing a WiMAC™ module comes in handy: “Imagine that you are working with a building where there is no cosmetically pleasing way to run wire to a certain door–let’s say the whole corridor is concrete. In that case, your only option is to use wireless. Luckily, you can just go to one of our distributors, grab a wireless module, and you’ve solved your problem!” The WiMAC™ module allows you to install door controllers in areas that would have been impossible to reach with traditional wiring. This expands the possibilities of what end-users can achieve within their access control systems, and allows for the creation of a system optimized to function within the specific infrastructure of a space.

INSTALLATION TIP: Before installing a wireless system, it’s very important to first complete a wireless test. By completing a test with PDK’s Range Test Kit, you can investigate the signal strength in certain areas of your location, and make an informed decision regarding the best placement for your devices.

PDK PoE++ module kit

ProdataKey’s PoE++ Module: Customizing Power

ProdataKey’s PoE++ module kit makes it possible to switch a device from being traditionally powered to receiving PoE in seconds. Power over Ethernet is a method of powering networking devices utilizing the wires in an ethernet cable. In systems that don’t utilize PoE, you need to run separate wires for data and power. This can turn your installation into a costly and time-consuming process, which is why PoE is a great alternative method!

All that installers need to do is plug in the small PoE++ module into the outlined spot on the control board. After this, once an ethernet cable is plugged in, the connected devices will start to receive power!

“The PoE module is going to give you PoE++ on the board through an ethernet cable,”

Dallan explains, “providing almost 2 amps per port. That’s plenty to do a reader, door position sensor, request-to-exit device, and even a door strike.” Installing ProdataKey’s unique PoE++ module is a great idea for any end-users who want to save on costs or who hope to install access control in a space where traditional wiring for power may be difficult to do.

PDK Red Max

Achieving Modularity with the Red Max and Expander Boards

The Red Max is an entirely customizable door controller, offering simple scalability to help all users accomplish their security goals. The PDK Red Max, automatically equipped with two power supplies and two four-door boards, can be completely customized through the installation of expander boards–namely the Red 1, Red 2, Red 4, and Aux 8 expansion boards. Capable of controlling up to 24 doors at one time, the Red Max allows installers to design a system tailored to the exact requirements of any given space. In addition to the helpful modularity of this controller, it also offers ProdataKey’s most advanced security features, including OSDP, mobile, and encrypted credential communication.

PDK Red Readers

BONUS TIP: Utilizing Modular Readers

While ProdataKey offers many solutions that allow installers to customize door controllers, modularity doesn’t stop there! Modularity is a notable feature of PDK’s newest line of Red readers, seeing as these readers are compatible with a variety of credentials for any application. PDK Red Readers have several contactless credential options, including high-security (13.56mHz), low-frequency prox (125kHz), and mobile. With the ability to choose the credential compatibility alongside a mullion, keypad, or single-gang appearance, PDK’s Red Readers are a flexible and reliable option to meet the security needs of any space.

PDK’s Modularity: Creating the Best Solution for End-Users

ProdataKey’s modular approach to access control systems revolutionizes the installation and system design experience. Rather than settling for an un-optimized, ordinary system, PDK’s innovative customizable controllers and door access modules allow end-users to build the control board of their dreams. With ProdataKey’s unique modularity at the forefront, PDK continues to merge convenience with high security and creates access control solutions that can be tailored to meet the needs of any and every user.
