Few things are more important than protecting where you live. Oxford Vista, a multi-dwelling unit located in Englewood, CO, just outside of Denver proper, recognized the need for an access control solution that enhances security and improves the overall resident and management experience. With 146 total units and various high-end amenities, the property sought a flexible, convenient solution to meet the modern needs of its residents. Partnering with ProSec Alarm, a Colorado-based full systems integrator, they implemented a ProdataKey (PDK) access control system and transformed how the community goes about their day-to-day.
Oxford Vista
Oxford Vista, completed in October 2023, is a modern, stylish, 5-story multi-family apartment building in Englewood, CO. The property is central to the neighborhood, close to parks, walking trails, and restaurants, and within steps of the light rail station for an easy commute to downtown Denver. The location appeals to an array of residents, offering access to everything the city offers while maintaining that small community feel. The upscale amenities, including a pool and hot tub, fitness center, and dog park, provide residents with a luxurious experience and ultimate convenience.
Access Control for Multi-Dwelling Communities
Smart solutions are the key to attracting residents and keeping them happy about where they live. PDK’s advanced solutions provide a robust and efficient way to manage access within large residential buildings, boosting security and convenience for both residents and property managers. Access control systems eliminate the need for clunky mechanical keys that pose both security and logistical challenges. PDK offers mobile access, advanced reporting, and flexible management, upgrading the overall safety of residents and streamlining administrative processes for properties. Investing in a powerful solution like PDK is crucial for today’s multi-family communities.
The PDK Solution
Oxford Vista, managed by Kirby LeMoine, needed an intelligent, secure, and convenient solution to control access to the property, understanding the importance of doing its part for community safety.
“Our residents want to feel safe. That’s an important part of wanting to call a place home. We don’t want anybody to just be able to walk in the building and access the residents,”
said LeMoine, Oxford Vista Community Manager.
The ProdataKey system for Oxford Vista secures various points of access within the complex. Installed by the ProSec team in October 2023, the system has a total of 30 entries, including two exterior doors, first-floor amenity spaces, two parking gates, rooftop access, a package room, and an elevator control. The system deploys PDK Red-8 ethernet controllers and Red readers, enabled with Bluetooth, for maximum security and performance.
PDK controls access to Oxford Vista’s gated parking lot, a premium amenity, preventing unauthorized vehicles from entering the premises. ProSec installed Nedap long-range readers at the lot’s North and South gates that work with proprietary RFID vehicle tags. Nedap reader technology quickly and accurately verifies each vehicle, keeping traffic moving and offering a smooth welcome home. Residents can also remotely access parking through their mobile devices for added convenience.
Smarter Communities
For today’s residents, it’s all about the ultimate living experience, so properties must leverage the most cutting-edge solutions. Oxford Vista uses Quext, an innovative apartment technology platform that creates a smart ecosystem for managers and residents. Quext provides a range of functionalities, including smart home automation, communication tools, and community management features. Recognizing the value of a cohesive, comprehensive system, Oxford Vista sought an access control solution that could seamlessly integrate with the Quext platform.
Integrating ProdataKey and Quext provides residents and property managers with a unified, convenient way to go about their day-to-day. The PDK system is seamlessly tied into Quext’s operating software, letting residents manage everything to do with their homes right at their fingertips. Quext’s mobile app is a centralized hub for the entire property. Allowing access, communicating with administrators, and submitting maintenance requests can be done all under one roof.
With the PDK integration, residents can unlock all PDK-secured entries and unit doors with their high-security key fob or smartphones on the Quext app. Residents no longer need to fumble around with traditional keys; instead, they can unlock the doors from anywhere, whether approaching the building, in the elevator, or even while away. This capability is valuable for an array of situations. Residents can grant guests or service providers access remotely without physical key exchanges. Forget your key fob and get locked out? Residents can quickly get access without needing to call a manager. “That added convenience feature is a major selling point for apartments like ours,” said LeMoine.
From the property management perspective, the ProdataKey and Quext integration streamlines their daily operations. When residents sign their lease agreement, managers can automatically send them an access credential through the Quext app. These credentials can be edited or revoked at any time with no downtime or need to be on-site. With seamless data synchronization, resident data and access permissions are instantly synced between PDK and Quext, eliminating time-consuming manual data entry. By replacing mechanical keys of the past with mobile credentials and fobs, on-site teams save time, money, and hassle in replacing lost or stolen keys, allowing them to focus on other aspects of the community experience.
High Security Where It Matters Most
Protecting residents is Oxford Vista’s top priority. ProdataKey delivers advanced features that maximize the security of the property. With that in mind, ProSec installed door position sensors on every PDK-controlled entry so management would be alerted when a door was left open.
“Propping doors open is a huge safety concern. With PDK, you can get those alerts even after hours if that door isn’t secure,”
said Trevor Howell, ProSec Business Development Rep. By monitoring the status of doors, management can reduce the risk of unauthorized people getting into the complex that could have the intention to cause harm.
PDK provides comprehensive reporting of all access events, ensuring management always has access to what’s going on with the property. This level of visibility increases accountability and aids investigations. Reporting provides an audit trail for who, when, and where someone gained access, which can provide valuable insight into when something was stolen, damage was done, or any other liability claim. “When properties advertise that they take tenants’ security top of mind, they can actually prove that. You can’t prevent everything, but you can minimize it, especially with the way this system is set up,” said Howell.
Intercom Integration
In addition to Quext, PDK is integrated with the ButterflyMX video intercom at the property’s front entrance. With the integration, residents can create temporary virtual keys for guests. This functionality is handy when a resident needs to let in a guest or delivery and isn’t immediately available to remotely unlock the door. Property management has the full power to monitor and manage this feature. “We’re able to revoke residents’ ability to create those keys if we run into an incident where someone is repeatedly letting just anyone in.” The beauty of this system is that changes can be made on the fly, anytime, anywhere. The integration also adds an extra layer of security to the property. Residents can visually verify that their guest, delivery, or service provider is who they say before letting them in.
The Partnership: PDK + ProSec
ProSec Alarm is a full systems integrator based in Denver, Colorado. Their team provides various services, including cameras, fire alarm systems, structured cabling, and access control, primarily in the commercial sector. ProSec was initially introduced to the Oxford Vista project through ProdataKey Regional Sales Director Marshall Burton, as it was a perfect fit for the property.
ProSec teams benefit from ProdataKey’s ease of installation with mobile configuration. In contrast with traditional on-premise systems, with PDK’s cloud-based solution, technicians don’t need an on-site computer to make configurations.
“Guys don’t always carry their computer, but they always carry their phone. You can do everything right from the mobile app as far as the programming. Save it, and it’s instant. There’s no waiting period. It’s real-time,”
said Howell. Technicians can even begin setting up their customers’ accounts before installing any hardware, saving them valuable time on-site.
ProSec understands the value of PDK’s cloud-based system. With ProdataKey, system updates are automatic—no need to roll a service truck for every new release. Technicians can also quickly troubleshoot issues as they arise. On pdk.io or the ProdataKey mobile app, view the comprehensive status of every device connected to the account and either resolve issues remotely or step on site and already know where to start.
PDK’s award-winning sales and support teams are a testament to their commitment to partnership. “Our experience has been great. I even used to know some of the tech support people by name. They almost always answer right away, and they’re always super helpful and willing to jump in to answer any questions,” said Howell. Building and maintaining successful partnerships is not just a goal but a core value held by ProdataKey.
This case study of Oxford Vista, in collaboration with ProSec Alarm, exemplifies the power of ProdataKey to modernize security and upgrade the resident experience in multi-dwelling communities. The PDK system’s convenient management, integrations, and high-security features stand as a testament to Oxford Vista’s commitment to safety and contribute to a better standard of living for residents. The success of this project highlights the role of technology and the value of partnerships to redefine security for communities.
